ACT Therapy in Halifax (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy)
Most therapy asks how you can stop feeling this. ACT asks a different question: what would you be doing right now if this feeling were not in charge?
ACT therapy in Halifax for anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and chronic stress. In person at our Parkland Drive office and online across Nova Scotia.
Difficult thoughts, emotions, and situations can hold you back from the life you want.
Avoiding a feeling works, briefly. Then it comes back louder, and the list of things you are managing around it gets a little longer.
That is the trap. Everything you do to not feel it costs you something, and eventually the cost is most of your life. The people who end up here are usually very good at coping. That is the problem.
If this connects to something in your past, our piece on how ACT supports trauma recovery is worth reading alongside this.
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy can help you create a life you love.

What Is Acceptance & Commitment Therapy?
ACT is a mindfulness-based approach built on an unusual premise: you do not have to feel better before you can start living better.
Instead of fighting difficult thoughts, you learn to hold them more loosely, then get on with what actually matters to you. It is not a quick fix and it is not positive thinking. It is about getting your life back while your brain is still doing its thing.
Accept your thoughts and feelings for what they are. Even though they may feel powerful, they do not define you.
Commit to actions based on your values, not your emotions. As a result, you create meaningful and lasting change.
ACT works through six core processes.
Who Is ACT For?
-
Anxiety -
Depression -
Eating Issues -
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) -
Stress -
Substance Misuse
Who Is ACT Not For?
-
With cognitive impairments -
Who have difficulty with comprehension -
With deep-rooted unresolved tension -
Who are looking for a quick fix -
Who would prefer to “talk it out”

What Can Acceptance & Commitment Therapy Help You With?
ACT helps you make decisions that align with your values by guiding you to:
Develop Better Mental Flexibility
When you feel stuck or overwhelmed, ACT helps you notice your thoughts without letting them take control. Even though these thoughts may feel intense, mindfulness practices teach you to observe them with distance. As a result, you learn which patterns no longer serve you and begin exploring healthier ways to view them. Over time, this new perspective opens the door to more balanced and empowering ways of thinking.
Express Your Feelings
When you are used to feeling ashamed or embarrassed about your emotions, ACT helps you express them without judgment. Even though sharing your feelings may feel uncomfortable, you learn to explore them with openness and care. As a result, you build a greater sense of safety and self-acceptance. Over time, this understanding deepens your connection with yourself and supports more authentic and honest relationships with the people you care about.
Reduce anxiety, depression, and stress
When it feels like your emotions are controlling your life, you may start to feel stuck, overwhelmed, and hopeless. Even though these moments feel heavy, therapy guides you in applying ACT principles in a steady and supportive way. As a result, you learn to accept difficult emotions and act in line with your values. Over time, these skills help you take meaningful steps toward a more balanced and fulfilling life. For a closer look at how this works with anxiety specifically, our post on how ACT helps with social anxiety explores the process in depth.
Understand yourself and your actions
When you are used to identifying with the emotions you want to escape, ACT helps you see that you are separate from your thoughts and feelings. Even though anxiety, stress, or depression may feel defining, they do not represent who you are. As a result, the acceptance and commitment process helps you become more self-aware and less attached to negative patterns. Over time, this shift supports you in regaining control and approaching life with greater clarity and balance.
Identify your values and take action
In therapy, you explore what truly matters to you and clarify the values that guide your life. Even though this process can feel vulnerable, we work together to identify what feels meaningful and find practical ways to live in alignment with those values. As a result, you may make small daily changes or take bigger steps toward lasting growth. Over time, these actions help you feel more fulfilled, purposeful, and connected to the life you want to create.
You experience thoughts, but you are not defined by them. Even though your mind can feel loud, you still have the power to choose how you respond.

ACT Therapy Questions We Hear the Most
How does ACT differ from other forms of therapy?
Most therapies work on changing how you feel. ACT works on changing your relationship to how you feel, so it has less say over what you do.
CBT might help you examine whether an anxious thought is accurate. ACT is less interested in whether the thought is true and more interested in whether arguing with it is getting you anywhere. If it is not, you learn to carry it and go do the thing anyway.
That is why ACT often suits people who have already tried talk therapy and understand their patterns perfectly well, and are still stuck.
How many sessions are typically needed to see results?
Most ACT work runs somewhere between 6 and 12 sessions, though it varies with what you are working on.
Some people notice a shift early, particularly around defusion, which can land quickly. Others take longer, especially if values work brings up bigger questions. There is no fixed schedule, and how much you practise between sessions makes more difference than how many sessions you book.
What can I expect from ACT?
Expect to do things, not just talk about them. ACT is experiential, which means mindfulness exercises, metaphors, and practical activities in session and between them.
If you were hoping to sit and discuss your week, this may not be the fit, and that is worth knowing before you book. If you have found pure talk therapy frustrating and want something to actually practise, this is usually why people like it.
How do I practice acceptance in ACT?
Acceptance in ACT does not mean approving of what is happening or resigning yourself to it. It means stopping the struggle with the parts you cannot control, so your energy goes somewhere useful.
In practice you will learn mindfulness exercises, cognitive defusion techniques, and values clarification work. Your therapist will try a few and keep whichever ones actually work for you, because they land differently for different people.
Is ACT evidence-based?
Yes. ACT was developed by psychologist Steven Hayes and has been researched extensively across anxiety, depression, and chronic pain.
The Association for Contextual Behavioral Science documents numerous randomised controlled trials supporting it. They also publish free practical audio exercises if you want to try the approach before booking anything.
How effective is ACT?
Research supports ACT for anxiety, depression, substance use, and chronic pain, among others.
What it tends to change is not how often difficult thoughts show up but how much they cost you. People report managing symptoms better, and more often, report that their life got bigger while the symptoms were still around.
